The last thing Dave Moxham, managing director, Surrey Single Ply Roofing, was expecting when lying on a beach on holiday in Menorca, was a text from BBC One DIY SOS team to say that they would like his help on an imminent project in Surrey.
Dave is a fan of the programme and his attention had been drawn to a Facebook advert placed by the production team, asking for contractors to help with projects on the new series of the show.
Dave applied and there begins his journey working on a project featured in the BBC One series ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ to help transform the home of a family in Epsom, Surrey.
Part of the build was to demolish the family’s existing garage, adding a single storey extension in its place to house a bedroom and wetroom for the family’s youngest son who is severely physically disabled.
Dave installed a 36m2 Sarnafil single ply flat roof membrane with upstand and a flat rooflight, supplied by ROOFmaker, on the new timber framed and brick clad extension which would form a complete living area for the young man.
The week proved to be more than Dave had ever expected and is something he wouldn’t hesitate to do again: “Although we had attended a pre-build meeting, I wasn’t really sure what to expect but it proved to be one of those life changing events when you think to yourself: ‘This has been one of the best and most emotional weeks of my life” he says.
“The camaraderie of all the crew, cast and the contractors was unbelievable and everyone worked so hard and pulled together to get the job finished so that the family could get back into their fantastic new home. ‘The reveal’ was an emotional moment, when the family saw their home for the first time and came outside to thank everyone”.
“It took some getting used to working up on the roof installing the membrane with a TV camera just a few inches away from you filming what you are doing but, I have to say, like a true celebrity, you do get used to it!” he said.
