We were delighted to see the October issue of Self Build and Design magazine feature a three storey flat  contemporary new-build home. Of course, the story was of particular interest to us as the Architect owner chose the Sika Sarnafil single ply membrane for the flat roof.  Architects are very familiar with the Sarnafil single ply membrane and you can see it used on commercial projects such as the Arsenal Emirates Stadium and Centre Parcs, Woburn.

For this particular project, the first time builders completely re-built an old bungalow in the Green Belt in Hertfordshire with a sculptural new home cloaked in black. The new house makes quite a statement with its all black render that blends into the wooded area where it is located.  Excavating the plot sunk the house down to retain the ridge height of the previous single-storey bungalow and also reduced its impact on site.

Flat roofs have become increasingly popular on new and self build projects as they help the property keep a sleek, low profile.  As we say a flat roof helps to keep the eyeline on the skyline!

Also, the flat roof modernist housing style is enjoying a revival and there’s huge interest in incorporating a flat or low pitched roof into a self build or renovation project.  This is partly a design trend and modern styling but also the cost effectiveness of this roofing option. As a result single ply membranes are proving to be a real game-changer.  Easy and quick to fit they are cheaper than metals such as zinc and lead, are high performance and great to look at.

The article in Self Build and Design is titled ‘Black beauty’ which truly sums up this magnificent project.
